Backbone
Album: [Untitled]
I was waiting for it
My “someday” to pour in
My “I made it” story
My “it’s okay, you’re there, breathe out”
It’s like I had this
Vision I’d someday have it
This house I saw way back when
I was a kid riding around
It was bigger than ours
They had some nicer cars
It look like something you’d see
Just off of Sunset Blvd
And that shifted my mind
Like that’s where happiness hides
Like that’s where I need to be
Until then, I’m on the grind
And that came with shame
Like until I made
Enough to buy that place
I wasn’t worth my veins
So maybe I should say
As I’m underpaid
Before all my best days
Are lost along the way
I got people I know
Who’ve got a seat in my soul
Who lift me if I fold
Or lift a drink when I don’t
Maybe that’s the dream that I own
That’s my receipt for my home
Like all I need to feel whole
Is a couple friends, one lover and a backbone
If I could be satisfied
Without permission from life
Without applause or a stage
Or vodka lacing my nights
There’d be nothing to chase
Nothing to lose or find
If within, I am enough
The need to prove it’s a lie
So maybe my someday
Is right in my face
Maybe looking for it only takes
as you slave away
Maybe I should say
As I’m underpaid
Before all my best days
Are lost along the way
I got people I know
Who’ve got a seat in my soul
Who lift me if I fold
Or lift a drink when I don’t
Maybe that’s the dream that I own
That’s my receipt for my home
Like all I need to feel whole
Is a couple friends, one lover and a backbone
